Overview
Chapa is the train we sell most on this route, and the one with the fewest surprises. It’s the only operator with lounges at both stations, has English-speaking staff, and offers a daytime SP8 return if you’d rather see the valley than sleep through it.

Why Choose Chapa Express Train?
Lounges at both ends: Chapa is the only train operator here with its own lounges — 2nd floor of Hanoi station, and Waiting Room 2 at Lao Cai. The Lao Cai lounge has showers, coffee and Wi-Fi for the 06:00 arrival.
The daytime option: the SP8 at 12:05 is the one daylight train back to Hanoi. Four departures a day and English-speaking staff on board.
The trade-offs are those of every Sapa train: shared toilets (two per carriage) and no dining car. The century-old track means noise and sway — Chapa hands out earplugs and says so up front.
Want a real double bed? That’s VIC’s VIP Double or Chapa’s H’mong Queen on request.

FAQs
About eight hours. Two trains nightly from Hanoi: SP3 at 22:00 (Lao Cai 05:55) and SP7 at 22:40 (06:25). Two back: the SP4 night train at 21:30 (Hanoi 05:35), or the SP8 daytime train at 12:05 (19:37).
Sapa is 35km up the mountain from Lao Cai station, about an hour by road. Add a transfer in the booking form — shared minivan $5 a seat or a private 4–7 seat car for $30 — and the driver meets you at the station exit. If you’d rather arrange it yourself, taxis wait outside the station.
Yes. All Chapa Express carriages are equipped with clean, shared restrooms, available throughout the journey. Toilets are maintained regularly to ensure hygiene and comfort for all passengers.
Your berth or private cabin, air-conditioning, bedding, reading light and power outlet, Wi-Fi, and Chapa’s amenity kit with water, fruit, snacks and tea or juice (soft drinks or beer in VIP and Suite). Lounge access at both stations is included. Not included: the Sapa transfer ($5 shared / $30 private — add it in the form) and any food sold on the train.
Solo, or happy to share: a Deluxe berth at $45 — most of our guests do. Couples or a parent and child: the private VIP ($215) or Suite ($235); the Suite has fixed twin berths and a plusher finish, the VIP folds down. For a queen bed, ask us about Chapa’s H’mong Suite.
At Chapa’s lounge: 2nd floor of Hanoi station (120 Le Duan) or Waiting Room 2 at Lao Cai station, both open 05:20–22:00. Bring your booking confirmation and passport, arriving 45–60 minutes before departure.
If you’re not in a hurry, yes. The SP8 leaves Lao Cai at 12:05 and follows the Red River back to Hanoi by 19:37, so you see the valley instead of sleeping through it. Same cabins, same price.
