If you’ve been comparing Hanoi-Sapa train options and keep seeing “Chapa Express” pop up, you’re probably wondering: is it actually any good, or is it just the cheapest one with a marketing budget? I’ve ridden Chapa more than 10 times since 2022 — both with our team and as a passenger checking it out — and I’ve put hundreds of our guests on it. Here’s what I actually think.

Short answer: Chapa Express Train is the value pick of the Hanoi-Sapa sleeper train market. Not the fanciest. Not the cheapest. But for travelers who want a clean cabin, working A/C, and a quiet night’s sleep without paying premium prices, it’s hard to beat. Let me show you why.

Cabin Types — What You Actually Get

Chapa offers three cabin tiers. Here’s what’s different about each — and which one I’d book.

4-Berth Deluxe Cabin (~$45/person)

chapa-express-train-review-1
For most travelers, the 4-Berth Deluxe Cabin is probably the sweet spot between comfort and price

When I first stepped into the cabin, it felt much cozier than I expected. The warm lighting and traditional décor give it a more inviting feel than many of the standard sleeper trains on this route. I wouldn’t call it luxurious, but I found it comfortable enough for a one-night journey to Sapa. If you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with friends and don’t mind sharing, this is probably the cabin I’d book.

Honest take: This is the cheapest Chapa cabin and it’s perfectly fine. The bed is firm but not uncomfortable, the cabin is clean, and the A/C works. You’ll share with 2-3 other travelers — usually international tourists, occasionally Vietnamese students.

VIP 2-Berth Cabin Twin Bed (~$215/cabin)

chapa-express-train-review-2
The VIP 2-Berth Cabin Twin Bed is the best option for customers

If you’re wondering whether the VIP cabin upgrade is actually worth paying for, I’d say yes — especially if sleep matters to you.

After a few rides, the biggest difference for me isn’t really the cabin itself — it’s how much calmer the night feels. Just two beds, fewer distractions, enough room for your stuff, and none of that awkward shared-cabin energy when people are still unpacking snacks at midnight.

It’s still a train cabin, not a hotel room, but I usually arrive in Lao Cai feeling much more rested in this one.

Honest take: I’d skip Deluxe unless you really value softer bedding. The standard cabin is already comfortable enough.

2 Berth Suite Cabin ($235/Cabin)

chapa-express-train-3
What immediately stands out about the 2-Berth Suite Cabin is the oversized bed — it feels far more like a hotel room than a train compartment

For most travelers, this cabin is probably overkill.  But after seeing it in person, I finally understood who it’s for.

The large double bed completely changes the feel of the space. Instead of feeling like you’re spending a night on a train, it feels more like a private room that just happens to be moving toward Sapa. It’s not cheap, but for honeymooners or couples celebrating a special trip, this is easily the most memorable cabin on Chapa Express.

Chapa Express VIP Lounge (Hanoi & Lao Cai)

One thing I genuinely like about Chapa Express is that they’re one of only two train operators on the Hanoi ↔ Sapa route with dedicated passenger lounges (the other being VIC Sapa Train). Most trains simply have you wait in the main station until boarding, so having a proper lounge is actually a nice little upgrade.

Hanoi Lounge

chapa-express-train-4
Hanoi Lounge: A cozy spot to relax before boarding, much calmer than waiting at the station

If you get to the station early, the Hanoi lounge is honestly a pretty nice place to wait. It feels more like a small hotel lobby than a train station waiting room, with comfortable seating, warm lighting, and enough space to relax before boarding. It’s not a reason to book Chapa on its own, but it definitely makes the departure experience feel a bit smoother.

Lao Cai Lounge

Lao Cai Lounge: Warm wooden interiors and quiet seating make early morning arrivals feel less rushed

Lao Cai Lounge: Warm wooden interiors and quiet seating make early morning arrivals feel less rushed

The Lao Cai lounge has a different feel altogether. The design leans more into local Northwest Vietnam influences, with wooden furniture, warm red tones, and ethnic-inspired decorative details throughout the space. After stepping off an overnight train, it’s a comfortable place to sit for a few minutes before continuing on to Sapa.

Onboard Experience — What to Actually Expect

I’ll walk you through a typical Chapa journey, because most “reviews” online skip the real details.

9:30 PM Hanoi station: You’ll arrive at the Hanoi Railway Station (Ga Ha Noi, 120 Le Duan St). Find Platform B for Chapa Express. Your ticket has your carriage number — usually 5-9 for Chapa cabins.

10:00 PM departure: Train pulls out exactly on time, in my experience. The first 30 minutes you’re moving through Hanoi suburbs — lights, urban noise — then it gets dark and the train rocks gently.

10:30 PM onwards: Cabin lights dim, A/C set to comfortable cool. Most travelers go to bed within an hour. Bring a sleep mask — there are still hallway lights that bleed under the door.

Through the night: The train makes 2-3 brief stops at small stations (you’ll barely notice). The rocking motion is gentle — gentler than most overnight buses. Most of our guests sleep 4-6 hours.

5:30 AM: Conductor knocks on cabin door, asks (in basic English) if you want coffee/tea. Order one — it’s hot and surprisingly decent.

6:05 AM Lao Cai arrival: Train pulls into Lao Cai station. You’ll have about 20 minutes to disembark. Just keep in mind that the train doesn’t arrive directly in Sapa. From Lao Cai Station, you’ll still need a transfer into town. Most travelers either book the shared shuttle ($5 per person) or upgrade to a private car ($30 for 4–7 seats) for a more comfortable arrival.

7:00 AM Sapa town: Shuttle drops you in central Sapa. Most hotels accept early bag drop. You can grab breakfast and start your day.

What Makes Chapa Different (vs Sapaly, Livitrans, King)

Here’s how I think about positioning Chapa vs the other major brands:

Brand Price tier Cabin quality Sweet spot for
Sapaly Express Premium ($55 – 198) Best 2-berth Couples, honeymooners
Chapa Express Mid ($45 – 235) Reliable mid-tier Mid-range travelers, solo
Livitrans Mid ($39 – 160) Slightly older fleet Train enthusiasts who want gold-trim aesthetic
King Express Mid-high ($48 – 210) Modern but pricier Travelers prioritizing quiet cabins
Family Express Mid ($45 – 165) Family-focused Families with kids 6+
Damitrans Train Budget ($45 – $175) Budget Budget travelers

What I Like About Chapa

1. Consistent reliability. In 10+ rides, I’ve had zero major issues. A/C working, cabins clean, on-time arrival. That sounds basic, but other operators have surprised me (not always positively).

2. Honest pricing. $45 for 4 Deluxe Cabin is the truest “budget-friendly + comfortable” pairing on this route. You can find cheaper open-berth sleeper trains, but the experience drops sharply.

3. VIP lounges in both Hanoi and Lao Cai. Chapa is one of only two Sapa train operators (along with VIC) that offers dedicated passenger lounges. It’s a small detail, but having a comfortable place to wait before boarding genuinely makes the experience feel smoother.

4. More flexible schedules. With two departures in each direction (Hanoi → Lao Cai: 22:00, 22:40 | Lao Cai → Hanoi: 12:05, 21:30), Chapa fits a wider range of travel plans than most Sapa trains.

5. Approachable staff. Conductors speak basic English. They’re not chatty but they’re helpful — and they wake you up before Lao Cai so you don’t oversleep.

What I Don’t Like About Chapa

1. The VIP 2-berth isn’t significantly nicer than Sapaly’s 2-berth. If you’re going to pay $45+, I’d rather pay $55 for Sapaly Deluxe and get a noticeably nicer space.

2. Shuttle to Sapa is contracted out. The minibus from Lao Cai to Sapa town is a separate operator — usually fine but occasionally the driver doesn’t speak English. Our team coordinates this for our booked guests.

If you’re still deciding how to get to Sapa, I’d honestly start here: Hanoi to Sapa Transport Guide. I compared buses, trains, limousines, and private cars side by side to help you figure out what actually fits your travel style.

Who Should Book Chapa Express

You should book Chapa if:

  • You want reliable mid-range comfort on a budget
  • You’re solo or a couple, fine sharing with strangers
  • You want a family/group cabin without paying premium prices
  • You’ve never taken a sleeper train and want a safe first experience
  • You prefer more flexible departure schedules than most Sapa trains offer
  • You appreciate small conveniences like VIP lounges in both Hanoi and Lao Cai, especially if you’re arriving early or waiting before boarding

You should book something else if:

  • You want the most luxurious option → choose Sapaly Express
  • You’re worried about train motion → consider VIP cabin bus instead
  • You need an arrival time before 6 AM → no option does this, but cabin bus is more flexible

How to Book Chapa Express Train

You have three options:

Option 1 — Direct with Chapa. Their website accepts international cards. Book 2-3 days ahead in low season, 1-2 weeks ahead during peak season (Sep-Nov).

Option 2 — Book through us. We arrange Chapa tickets as part of our Sapa packages — includes Sapa-side shuttle, hotel transfer coordination, and our 24/7 WhatsApp support. Same price as direct booking, no surcharge.

Option 3 — Hanoi travel agents. Many shops in Hanoi Old Quarter sell Chapa tickets. Price is sometimes $2-5 higher than direct. Convenient if you’re already in Hanoi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chapa Express better than Sapaly Express?

For pure quality, Sapaly is slightly better. For value-per-dollar, Chapa wins. Sapaly’s premium cabins feel more polished; Chapa’s standard cabins are equally functional at lower cost. I recommend Sapaly for honeymooners and Chapa for everyone else.

What time does the Chapa Express arrive in Sapa?

Train arrives Lao Cai at 06:05. After the 1-hour shuttle, you’re in Sapa town around 07:00 AM.

Can I book just the train and arrange my own Sapa shuttle?

Yes, but I don’t recommend it. Lao Cai station is busy and confusing at 6 AM. Stick with operators that include the shuttle.

Are Chapa cabins safe for solo female travelers?

Yes. I’ve recommended Chapa to many solo female guests. Cabin doors lock. Conductors patrol the corridor. If you want extra peace of mind, book a Family cabin solo (whole cabin, no shared strangers).

Does Chapa Express run during Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year)?

Yes, but with limited capacity and 30-50% surcharge. Book 4+ weeks ahead during late Jan-early Feb.

Can children sleep in Chapa cabins?

Yes. Children under 5 typically share a parent’s berth (cheaper). Children 5+ usually need their own berth. The Family cabin booking is the easiest way to keep everyone together.

What’s the difference between Standard and Family cabins?

Same layout. Standard is sold per-berth (you may share with strangers). Family is sold as the whole cabin (no strangers). For groups of 3-4, Family is the better deal.

My Honest Verdict on Chapa Express

Chapa Express Train is the train I’d book if I were planning my own Sapa trip on a normal budget. Not a backpacker run, not a luxury escape — just a reliable, comfortable sleeper that gets the job done without surprises.

If you have $45 per person and a flexible schedule, Chapa Standard or Family cabin is a confident yes. If you have $55+ and want the train experience to feel special, go Sapaly. If you have less than $25, you’re probably looking at open-berth sleeper buses — and at that point, I’d actually recommend our VIP cabin buses instead. The cost gap is small and cabin buses arrive Sapa earlier.

For most travelers most of the time, Chapa Express is the answer. Book it, sleep well, wake up in Sapa.
