Hanoi to Moc Chau is 208 km. Google Maps timed the fastest run at 4 hours 41 minutes via CT03, CT02 and QL6 when I checked on 27 July 2026. The expressway sections have tolls. Two alternative routes come out at 207 km and 212 km, both around 5 hours.
That 4h41 is a car driving straight through. Add an hour for a bus. Public buses pick up along the way and stop once for food, which is why the honest number for a coach is 5 to 6 hours, not four.
There is no railway to Moc Chau and no airport, so this is a road trip whichever way you cut it. The one real decision is how comfortable you want to be for those five hours.

By public bus — the cheapest way
Public buses to Moc Chau leave My Dinh bus station (20 Pham Hung) through the day, around 15 departures. Operators on the route include Thanh Chung and Manh Cuong. Fares run roughly 130,000–200,000₫ ($5–8), depending on the operator and the seat class. The cheap end is a standard seat; the top end buys a sleeper berth or a local nine-seat van.
It is the budget pick and it works. What you give up: you get yourself out to My Dinh, and the driver may stop for passengers along QL6. The drop-off is Moc Chau bus station, not your hotel. Budget a taxi or a xe om at the far end, because most of the guesthouses are spread along the plateau.
By limousine van — comfort and value
A 9–11 seat limousine van is the middle option and the one most of our guests take, from $16 a seat. Reclining leather seats, air conditioning, WiFi, water and charging ports, with departures through the day.
The part worth paying for is not the seat, it is the pickup. Vans collect at main Hanoi points or your hotel, and drop door to door in Moc Chau town for a small extra fee. That removes both taxi rides from the day. They also run 4.5 to 5 hours rather than 5 to 6, because there are fewer stops.
By private car — door to door for groups
Travelling as a family or a group? A private car (4–7 seat) is the flexible call, from $105 — hotel pickup, your own departure time, and stops for photographs on the way. It is also the fastest at 4 to 4.5 hours, since it never picks anyone else up.
Four people in a 7-seat car works out around $26 each. That is more than a limousine seat, but you keep the car all day. On this road that matters more than it sounds: the tea hills and the Thung Khe pass viewpoints are on your route, not detours.
When to go — Moc Chau runs on a flower calendar
Unlike most Vietnamese mountain towns, Moc Chau has no single best month. It has four different trips, and which one you get depends entirely on when you book.
- Late November to early December — white mustard flowers. The signature bloom. The fields open from October and hold into late December, but the peak is those two weeks, and it is the busiest fortnight of the Moc Chau year.
- Late January to mid February — plum blossom. Then peach blossom takes over, running into March and peaking from mid February to early March. Cold, clear, and the least crowded of the flower seasons.
- April to October — Dai Yem waterfall at full flow. The rainy season is what feeds it. Come in the dry months and you will find a wall of rock with a trickle down it. Every impressive Dai Yem photograph you have seen is a summer photograph.
- September to October — golden rice in the valleys below the plateau, overlapping the tail of the waterfall season.
The tea hills are green all year, so there is no wrong month. There is only a month that matches the photographs you came for.
Tips for the trip
- Book ahead in the first week of December and around Tet. Mustard-flower weekends and the plum blossom sell out the vans first.
- Rent a motorbike in Moc Chau (about $10 a day). The flower fields, the waterfall and the tea hills are spread across the plateau, and without wheels you will see one of them.
- Pack a layer. The plateau sits around 1,050 m and runs noticeably cooler than Hanoi, especially after dark and through the winter blossom season.
- Note your bus or van plate number, and check the seat-back pocket before you step off. The route’s most common complaint is a phone left on board.
