Daytime 12:05 or overnight 21:30?
Take the 12:05 if you want to actually see the route. This is the leg where a day train makes sense. You lose no sightseeing morning — you’ve already had your trip — and you arrive in Hanoi at 20:35, a civilised hour for check-in and a late dinner. I took it last November and had the Red River valley in low golden light for the final two hours — the outbound night train shows you none of that.
Take the 21:30 if you want one last full day in Sapa. Trek in the morning, dinner in town, shuttle down, sleep on the train. The catch is the arrival: 05:35 in Hanoi means most hotels won’t have your room ready. Plan for it — book early check-in, or do what our guests do: drop bags at the hotel and walk to the Old Quarter for pho while the city wakes up.
The return timeline (what to plan backwards from)
For the 21:30 overnight: hotel checkout is noon, so leave your bags at reception and keep the afternoon. Aim for a shuttle or car down the mountain by 18:30–19:00. The 32 km to Lao Cai takes about an hour, and you’ll want spare time at the station to exchange your voucher for a paper ticket. Eat dinner in Sapa before you go down; Lao Cai station’s food options are instant noodles and not much else.
For the 12:05 daytime: leave Sapa by 09:30–10:00. That means checkout, breakfast and one last viewpoint — not a trekking morning. Book the shuttle the night before; morning departures fill up with the checkout wave.

No — Sapa has no railway. Every “Sapa to Hanoi train” departs from Lao Cai station, 32 km away. The shuttle down takes about an hour and costs $5/person shared or $30 for a private car.
