The first thing that catches your eye isn’t the music. It’s the bar. Flames flare for a second, smoke curls under an upside-down glass, and cocktails arrive looking more like a performance than a drink. An hour later, the DJ turns the volume up, the LED wall comes alive, and the same room feels completely different. That’s AMG in a nutshell.
Two bars in one
Walk in at 7 PM, and AMG is a lounge: sofas, low music, staff with time to burn a cocktail properly. Walk in at 11 PM on a Saturday, and it is something else. A DJ behind the decks, an LED wall flashing welcome messages, every sofa ringed with shisha pipes and fruit trays.
An earlier version of this review called AMG “calm and cozy”. That was half right, and only before 10 PM. Sapa isn’t a party town, and AMG is the closest thing its centre has to a proper night venue. All the more reason to know which of the two bars you’re walking into.
AMG Lounge Sapa: the facts
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Address | 33 Cau May Alley (Ngõ Cầu Mây), central Sapa |
| Hours | 5 PM – 3 AM daily |
| Price range | Cocktails flat 200,000 VND (~US$8); spirit bottles from ~1,350,000 VND (~US$53) |
| Music | Lounge playlists early; live DJ sets from around 10 PM — loud |
| Seating | Bar counter, indoor sofas, small street-side terrace |
The lane drops off the Cau May walking street, a few minutes downhill from Sapa’s central square. Look for the black facade with gold AMG letters — at night you can’t miss it.
One thing the photos oversell: this is not a rooftop bar. It sits at street level in the alley, and the terrace looks out at the street, not over the valley. For altitude, Sapa has other roofs; AMG’s show happens indoors.
What to order, and what it costs
The menu lives on tablets, and the pricing is simple: every cocktail costs 200,000 VND. The classics — Whiskey Sour, Old Fashioned, Negroni, Long Island Iced Tea -are made with more care than a mountain town needs. The house signature, Cloud in the Forest, is a minty-green thing that arrives beneath a smoke-laced lid.
Groups go bigger. A one-litre cocktail pitcher runs 1,000,000 VND, and a tray of twenty layered shots 1,200,000 VND. Spirit bottles climb from Ballantine’s at 1,350,000 VND to Martell XO at 9,500,000 VND.
Two honest notes on price. These are Hanoi numbers, not Sapa numbers — a street-side beer nearby costs a third of one cocktail here. Prices come from the in-house menu we photographed and can change without notice.
When to go, and who you’ll drink with

Before 9 PM, you get the counter to yourself, and the bartenders have time to talk. Weeknights stay like that until close. Friday and Saturday after 10 PM, the room fills with young Vietnamese travellers — birthday groups, bottle-service tables, shisha smoke drifting through the light rig.
Here’s the detail that saves your evening: tables that book bottles get priority. Walk-ins parked on a sofa can be asked to move when a booking arrives — it happens, and reviewers mention it with some heat. Sit at the bar counter instead. Nobody moves you from the counter, and the counter is where the show is anyway.
The honest part

The ratings tell two stories. Google sits around 4.7 from roughly 400 reviews, mostly Vietnamese guests who came with a group and booked a table. TripAdvisor holds a brutal 1.0 from its first two foreign reviewers — one was moved off his seat after twenty minutes, the other found the boss cold to strangers.
Both stories are true. AMG treats booked tables like royalty and casual walk-ins like furniture. Add the billing complaints — balloons appearing on bills unordered, drinks cleared before they were finished — and the rule writes itself: sit at the counter, order simple, photograph your bill.
From our team: we send guests here for exactly one thing — a properly made 200,000 VND cocktail at the counter before dinner. For that, it’s the best bar counter in central Sapa. We stopped sending anyone who wanted a quiet full evening.
FAQs
Is AMG Lounge Sapa a rooftop bar?
No. AMG sits at street level at 33 Cau May Alley in central Sapa, with a small terrace facing the street. The views in its photos are from the town, not from a roof.
How much are drinks at AMG Lounge Sapa?
Every cocktail costs a flat 200,000 VND (~US$8). Cocktail pitchers are 1,000,000 VND, twenty-shot trays 1,200,000 VND, and spirit bottles run from about 1,350,000 to 9,500,000 VND. Prices can change.
What time does AMG Lounge open?
Daily from 5 PM to around 3 AM. Before 10 PM it’s a quiet cocktail lounge; from about 10 PM, especially Friday and Saturday, DJ sets make it loud.
Is AMG Lounge worth visiting?
Yes, for one or two well-made cocktails at the bar counter in the early evening. It’s not the place for a quiet night out, and walk-ins should check their bill before paying.
I walked in planning one drink — check the prices, take a few notes, leave. The Whiskey Sour was better than it had any need to be, so a second followed. The DJ started somewhere during the third, and the notes never got written. Plan one drink at AMG. Budget for three.
