Sapa to Ninh Binh distance and travel time
Sapa to Ninh Binh is 401 km. Google Maps timed the fastest run at 6 hours 5 minutes via the CT05 expressway when I checked on 27 July 2026, and the road has tolls. If your hotel is out at Tam Coc rather than in town, it is 409 km and 6 hours 13 minutes.
Now the number that actually matters. No transfer on this route takes six hours. Our own vehicles quote 7.5 to 9 hours, and they are not padding it. The first 32 km down from Sapa to Lao Cai is mountain road you cannot rush, buses collect passengers before they leave town, and everyone stops to eat. Budget eight hours and you will not be disappointed.
There is no railway to Sapa and no airport near Ninh Binh, so every realistic option is by road. The route runs down the CT05 to the edge of Hanoi, then south past the capital into the karst country.
One naming note: the 2025 provincial reorganisation merged Ninh Binh city into Hoa Lu city, so Google Maps may resolve “Ninh Binh” to Hoa Lu. Same place, same drive — hotels and drivers still say Ninh Binh.

By bus — what most people book
The overnight cabin bus is the sweet spot on this route, and not only on price. Run it overnight and the eight hours cost you nothing but a night you would have spent in bed anyway. You also save a hotel night.
We book four services here. A basic seat bus from $19 is the cheapest way south. The three cabin services all sit at $31: HK Open Tour and G8 Open Tour (8–9 hours), and Royal Cabin (8–8.5 hours). For twelve dollars more than the seat bus you get a lie-flat berth with a curtain, air conditioning and usually WiFi.
Pro tip: take the layer you wore in Sapa onto the bus rather than packing it. The overnight air conditioning runs hard, and you are heading from mountain cold into delta humidity. You want that layer on board, not at the bottom of your bag.
By private car — door to door for families
A 4–7 seat private car from $175 takes 8 to 8.5 hours, with hotel pickup in Sapa and hotel drop-off in Ninh Binh or Tam Coc. Four people split it at about $44 each. More than a cabin berth, but you travel by daylight, you keep your luggage with you, and the driver stops when you ask.
This is the option to take if you are travelling with children, or if the idea of arriving somewhere new at six in the morning does not appeal.

By private limousine — for a full group
A 9–11 seat private limousine from $280 is the fastest transfer we run here, at 7.5 to 8 hours. Hotel in Sapa to hotel in Ninh Binh City or Tam Coc, with no vehicle change.
Split eight ways it lands around $35 a head — under the price of a cabin berth plus the taxi you would need at the other end. Below about six people the private car is better value; above it, this is the one.
Is there a train from Sapa to Ninh Binh?
No. Sapa has no railway station — the nearest is Lao Cai, 32 km down the mountain — and there is no through service to Ninh Binh. Doing it by rail means three legs, and it is worth seeing the real timetable before you consider it:
- Sapa → Lao Cai station: about 32 km, roughly an hour. Shuttle around $5 a person, private car about $30.
- Lao Cai → Hanoi: only two departures a day — SP8 at 12:05, arriving 19:37 (7h32), and the overnight SP4 at 21:30, arriving 05:35 (8h05). A berth in a 4-berth tourist cabin starts at $39 per person with Livitrans, and runs $45–48 with most other operators.
- Hanoi → Ninh Binh: the easy leg. Ten trains a day, 2h08 to 2h16, from the 06:00 SE7 through to the 21:45 SE1.
Chain the best connection — overnight SP4 into Hanoi at 05:35, then SE7 at 06:00 — and you reach Ninh Binh at 08:13, roughly 13 hours after leaving Sapa. That is five hours more than the bus, for more money and two changes with luggage.
Take the train only if you actually want to stop in Hanoi. As a way of getting to Ninh Binh it is the worst option on this page. As the first half of a Hanoi stopover, it is a perfectly good night’s sleep.
When to go — one fortnight beats the rest of the year
Ninh Binh is fine to visit any month, and most guides will tell you March–May or September–November for dry, cool weather. That is true, and it also misses the point.
The thing worth planning a trip around is the Tam Coc rice harvest. The paddies along the Ngo Dong river turn from green to gold from mid-May, peaking late May into mid-June. The full gold lasts only about 15 to 20 days before it is cut. Get the timing right and the boat ride through Tam Coc runs between walls of gold. Get it wrong by three weeks and you are looking at stubble.
Everything else is steady. September to November is the reliable pick for dry, mild days and thinner crowds. March to May is warm and green, before the summer heat arrives.
Where to base yourself
Ninh Binh spreads out, and where you sleep decides how much of it you see:
- Tam Coc — the tourist heart. Walking distance to the boat pier, the widest choice of homestays and restaurants, and the golden paddies on your doorstep in June. Where most first-timers should stay.
- Trang An — quieter, closer to the larger boat route and Bai Dinh, and better if you are coming to photograph rather than to eat out.
- Ninh Binh / Hoa Lu city — the practical base if you are arriving late or leaving by train, since the station is here. Less atmosphere, more convenience.
Two nights is the honest minimum. One night means you spend it recovering from the bus.
