Noi Bai (HAN): the airport you’ll actually use
Noi Bai International (IATA: HAN) sits on Hanoi’s northern edge — conveniently, the Sapa side of the city. International flights land at Terminal 2; domestic connections from Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and the rest of the country use Terminal 1, a short free shuttle apart. Because the airport is already north of the city centre, you can start the Sapa leg straight from the terminal without ever entering Hanoi traffic.
Is Sapa getting its own airport?
On paper, yes. The Sa Pa Airport project has sat on Lao Cai’s plans for years: 371 hectares at Cam Con in Bao Yen district, right beside the Hanoi–Lao Cai expressway. Phase one is sized for 1.5 million passengers a year. The reality has moved much slower. A ceremonial groundbreaking in 2022 was followed by three idle years while the province searched for a private investor. The latest push aimed to restart things in late 2025. As of August 2026, there is still no opening date worth planning a trip around — and even once it flies, the site sits about 60 km from Sapa town. Until then, every flight-based itinerary runs through Hanoi.
From the runway to the mountains
The transfer is the easy part. Sleeper and cabin buses pick up directly at the Noi Bai terminals. Nine-seat limousine vans do the same with hotel drop-off in Sapa, and a private car turns the leg into a door-to-door ride. Prefer rails? Hi there – on the train journey back from Sapa, is it possible to disembark from the train near the airport, e.g. at Phuc Yen, and then transfer to the aiport ? If so, what time does the train stop at Phuc Yen? (I need to catch an 8am flight from the airport).

After checking the trains from Sapa to Hanoi, there is only train SP8 departing at 12 noon and arriving at Phuc Yen Station at 18:11.
However, SP8 does not run regularly, so please let me know your travel date. I will check further.
