Pistachio shows up in three of our guides already — the train-view list, the best-view list and the pool list — so it earned a proper standalone verdict. We re-read the review pile in July 2026, including the angriest one-stars, and the pattern is clean enough to build a booking strategy on.

Location is the top Booking subscore at 9.6, comfort right behind at 9.5, and only 14 of 1,797 reviews land below five points. Add a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice badge and the picture is consistent: when Pistachio disappoints, it is almost never the building — it is the room assignment. Which is fixable, and that is what the rest of this review is for.
What it actually is
A polished four-star at 29 Thac Bac Street: 650 metres from the centre, 300 from the Stone Church, near the Muong Hoa funicular line. Some rooms watch the red train pass — the reason it stars in our train-view guide. Rooms run from the 38m² Superior to a 127m² Presidential with a terrace over the terraced fields. The decor threads ethnic-minority patterns through a modern build, and the bathtub-in-every-room policy quietly beats most competitors at this price.
The rule: book high, book valley-side
Now the part the booking sites will not tell you. Sapa builds fast, and newer blocks have risen in front of Pistachio’s lower floors — a 2024 one-star review booked a “mountain view” and got a wall. The view still exists, but it now lives upstairs: ask explicitly for a high floor when you book, and confirm it at check-in.
Second: the Superior City rooms face the street, and Thac Bac carries trucks and horns from early morning — light sleepers should pay the difference for the valley side. Premium Deluxe on a high floor is the sweet spot; the Executive Suite adds a private balcony over the valley.
The two pools
Up top, beside the 12th-floor Fansi Sky Bar, sits a rooftop infinity pool with Fansipan and the valley laid out around it. It is unheated sky-water: glorious from May to October, honestly too cold for most of the winter — reviews say so, and we agree. That is what the second pool is for.
The first-floor four-season pool sits behind glass, warm in winter and cool in summer — the hotel’s own wellness page promises it, and January guests confirm it. One honest note from the reviews: rooms directly below the pool floor occasionally hear the pumps; if you sleep lightly, mention it when booking.

The honest cautions
Service is warm until it is tested: the sharpest reviews describe complaint handling and English hiccups when something goes wrong. Rare in 1,797 reviews, but a real pattern. Keep requests written and simple.
Check your bill: one 2023 review reported a double charge that took effort to unwind.
And manage the winter maths: the rooftop pool is a summer amenity; from November to April, the indoor pool is the one you are actually buying.
