Distance and travel time
It is about 130 km by road from Hanoi to the coast at Cat Hai, then a short ferry, speedboat or cable-car crossing to Cat Ba island. Door to door the whole thing takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on the option and how the connection times fall.
Because Cat Ba is an island, every route has two parts: the drive to the coast, then the crossing. The simplest options bundle both into one ticket, and that is most of what you are paying for.
By limousine bus and speedboat — the easy default
For most travellers this is the answer. A shared limousine van collects you in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, drives to the coast, and includes the crossing to Cat Ba town. About 3–3.5 hours, and bus, boat and tolls are all in the one ticket.
Vans have air-con, WiFi and reclining seats, with departures through the morning and early afternoon. It is the comfortable pick for families or anyone with luggage.
By bus and cable car — skip the ferry queue
A newer combo replaces the boat with the Cat Ba cable car from Cat Hai. You take a bus to Cat Hai, then cross the bay by gondola — about 3.5 hours in total, roughly $13–19 one-way for the bundle.
The cable car itself is cheap and short. The Cat Hai–Phu Long line runs 3,955 m in 10 to 15 minutes, and a one-way ticket is 70,000₫ — about $2.75, or 67,000₫ booked online. Children over a metre tall pay full fare; under that they ride free. It also holds the Guinness record for the world’s tallest cable-car pylon, at 214.8 m.
Worth knowing: Sun World also sells a Plus ticket that adds the shuttle bus from Phu Long into Cat Ba town or the central bay. That is the version to buy — otherwise you land at Phu Long with 20 km still to go.
The catch worth planning around: the cable car runs 08:30 to 15:45 only, with roughly hourly departures. That last gondola is early. If your bus reaches Cat Hai at four in the afternoon, you are taking the ferry — planned or not. Sun World states the schedule can change, so check sunworld.vn/operations the day before.
By train and ferry — the budget DIY route
Doing it yourself is cheap but longer, in three steps:
- Train Hanoi → Hai Phong: about 2.5 hours, four departures a day (HP1, LP3, LP5, LP7). A soft air-con seat runs 124,000–159,000₫ depending on the date, bookable on dsvn.vn.
- Road to the pier: about 30 minutes out to Dong Bai on Cat Hai. Speedboats also leave from Ben Binh in Hai Phong city itself, which is closer but a longer crossing.
- Cross to Cat Ba: the Dong Bai–Cai Vieng ferry takes 40–50 minutes; a speedboat from Ben Binh runs about $12.
Ferry fares are small: about 45,000₫ for a motorbike and only 10,000–14,000₫ on foot. A car costs more and depends on the vehicle, so ask at the gate.
Budget 4–5 hours for the whole DIY chain, and check the last sailing before you commit to it.
By private car — door to door
A private car collects you in Hanoi and drives the expressway to Dong Bai — about 130 km in 2 to 2.5 hours. The car boards the ferry with you, then drives you to your Cat Ba hotel: roughly 3–4 hours all in. The most flexible option for families or anyone with real luggage.
By motorbike — for riders
If you ride, this is a good “phượt” run. Follow National Road 5 and cross the Tan Vu–Lach Huyen sea bridge — about 135 km to Dong Bai in roughly 3.5 hours. Take the ferry to Cai Vieng, then ride the last 30 minutes into Cat Ba town.
Rentals are about $9–11 a day, and a two-day round trip works out near $30 including ferry and fuel. Only ride it if you are already confident on Vietnamese roads.

Note the last row. The cable car is faster across the water but lands you at Phu Long, still 20 km from town — unless you buy the Plus ticket with the shuttle included. Without it, the door-to-door difference is smaller than the crossing times suggest.
Tips for the trip
- The ferry pier changed. Dong Bai replaced the old Got pier in March 2024. Older guides and some drivers still say “Got”.
- Mind the 15:45 cut-off if the cable car is your plan — the ferry runs hours later.
- Book a combo ticket — bundling road and crossing saves a queue and a scramble.
- Travel light. You change vehicles at least once, sometimes twice.
- Avoid peak summer weekends if you can; the pier queues are worst then.
Pairing Cat Ba with the rest of the north
Cat Ba and Sapa are the two trips people most often add either side of Hanoi, and they are opposites: two nights of sea air, then the mountains. Do Cat Ba first while you are still on the coast, then take the night bus or train up to Sapa.
