Hanoi to Hue: distance and travel time
The railway distance from Hanoi to Hue is 688 km on the Reunification line, and Vietnam Railways’ own average for the run is 12 hours 32 minutes. That matches the timetable: the fastest train does it in 12h30, the slowest in 15h05.
By road it is shorter — 647 km, which Google Maps timed at 9 hours 55 minutes via the CT01 expressway when I checked on 28 July 2026, tolls included. A flight to Phu Bai takes 1 hour 15 minutes in the air.
So the train is never the fast option. What it is instead: the only one where the 688 km is the point rather than the cost.
Hanoi to Hue train times
Nine trains leave Hanoi for Hue every day. Times below are from Vietnam Railways’ own timetable, checked for 5 August 2026.

The one to book is SE3. It leaves at a civilised hour and it is the fastest on the route. It also puts you in Hue at 07:50 — early enough for a full day, late enough that you have actually slept. SE1 at 21:45 is the next best if you want a later start.
Avoid SE9 and SE23 unless you have a reason. Both arrive in the small hours — 03:07 and 05:20 — which means paying for a hotel night you barely use, or waiting out the dark at the station.
Hue to Hanoi train times
Coming back north, there are also nine trains — but they are consistently about an hour slower, running 13h26 to 16h43 against 12h30 to 15h05 going south. Same track, same distance; the northbound schedules simply hold more time.

Northbound, SE20 at 20:48 is the sensible overnight — it arrives 11:10, which is a normal hour to reach a city. SE4 is faster on paper but lands you in Hanoi at 04:36, and SE2 at 05:42 is not much better.
Note that both directions renumber: odd numbers run south, even numbers run north. SE3 southbound and SE4 northbound are the same fast pair.
What you are actually booking
Every service on this route is a Vietnam Railways SE train. Unlike the Hanoi–Lao Cai line, where private operators attach their own tourist carriages, there are no branded luxury cabins to Hue — anyone advertising one is reselling a standard berth.
The classes, cheapest to most comfortable:
- Soft seat, air-conditioned — fine for the daytime SE7 or SE5. Not for thirteen hours overnight.
- Six-berth cabin — three bunks each side. Cheapest lie-flat option; the top bunks are cramped and the cabin is busy.
- Four-berth cabin — two bunks each side, noticeably more room and more likely to be quiet. On a 12–15 hour overnight this is the one to pay for.
Lower bunks cost more than upper ones in the same cabin, and they are worth it: you get the window and you are not climbing over anyone at 3 AM.
How to book
Book direct at dsvn.vn, Vietnam Railways’ own site. It takes international cards, and you get the state fare rather than a reseller’s markup.
On fares: they move with the date, the train and the berth, and they rise sharply around Tet and the summer peak. We do not print a number here because any figure we quoted would be wrong within a month — check dsvn.vn for your actual date. As a rule, book two to three weeks ahead for a four-berth cabin in high season, and expect the lower bunks to go first.
The other ways to do this journey
The train is not the only option, and for some trips it is not the right one. Honestly compared:

Add airport time at both ends and the flight is closer to four hours door to door — still far quicker, but not the 75 minutes it looks like. And it costs you a hotel night that the overnight train includes for free.
The drive is the option to take only if you want the stops. Straight through, ten hours in a car is worse than thirteen in a bunk.
Arriving in Hue — what comes next
Hue station sits about 1.5 km southwest of the Perfume River, walkable to most of the hotels on the south bank and a short taxi from the Citadel.
Most people do not stop in Hue. It is the northern end of the central run. The usual next legs are Da Nang, for the beaches and the airport, or Hoi An for the old town — both a few hours south over the Hai Van pass. We run private transfers on both.
